Much loved for its sweet, nutty taste, this Dutch cheese has characteristic large holes due to the ripening process that makes it recognizable everywhere.
Maasdam cheese is named after the small town of Maasdam. This old town was founded in 1270 at a crossing over the river Maas. Maasdam cheese has not been around as long as Gouda and Edam, but is just as popular. Its holes and taste mean that this cheese is referred to as the Dutch Emmental.
