History and uniqueness

Grana Padano is one of the most popular Italian cheeses. "Grana" translated from Italian means grainy, "Padano" comes from the Po Valley. It is alleged that Grana Padano was created by monks cysters from the Chiaravalle monastery near Milan, where cheeses are produced for about 1,000 years. Grana Padano is matured for at least 9 months, and crystals can be seen formed on the surface of fracture of the cheese. This cheese is formed in very big wheels, which are covered with dark-coloured, brownish-yellow bark, with the initials embossed. In 1996 the status of the protected designation of origin (PDO) was given, so this means that Grana Padano cheese is produced only in strictly defined regions of Italy from cows, grown in those regions, milk, while the quality of the GRANA PADANO crown is burned on each cheese's wheel. This is the most popular cheese in the world with a PDO status.
