History and uniqueness

Serrano – translated from Spanish means "comes from a mountainous area or mountain range". So this is where the history of serrano ham began. The ancient Celtic civilization began salting and drying meat in the mountains. The meat at the time was a wild black pig called Iberica, so even until the 19th century this ham was called Iberica and it was a really expensive product. Later when the ham was made from domestic pigs, it was started to be called serrano. And this name quickly became popular in all Spain and all over the world. It was the name Iberica that was rooted in this product, which was not a universal product but a luxury item. With the start of drying ham from domestic pigs, the name was changed to serano, which quickly became popular not only in Spain but around the world.
