Gouda Kroon cheese was first mentioned in 1184, making it one of the oldest cheeses in the world. The name of the cheese originates from a small Gouda town in the Netherlands, which was famous for cheese auctions in the 12th century. There is a tradition to organize cheese auctions every Thursday in the town of Gouda in the period of June - August untill these days. Gouda Holland cheese (which is Gouda Kroon cheese) is registered in the EU as having Protected Geographical Indication status (PGI). This cheese can only be made in the Netherlands and can only use milk produced by Dutch cows. This guarantees the quality and origin of the product.
